At the spring eve of 2017, Haohous gallery invited two international artists to have their dual exhibition. They were Heli Garcia who came from Spain and Ajim Juxta who came from Malaysia. They’ll use their different creative styles for the theme—Reconstruction- Heli Garcia & Ajim Juxta dual exhibition. Although they have distinctive styles, both of them proposed the suspicious attitude and viewpoint, reflecting on traditional values, construction of orders, and ideal society. It’ll be such a different perspective and visual feast.

Heli Garcia, an artist from Spain, graduated from University of Granada with the higher diploma in 2011. The paintings selected for the exhibition belong to three different series of his work, which means quite different paths. The series of decorative objects which conscious of the occidental tradition of still life and the ancient genre of Vanitas painting, this work in the conception of these pieces was to assume and to carry out his role of the maker in order to create ironic games of representation. The older painting titled ’and that was called love’ was the works where he sought in animal world analogies and responded the European economic crisis and the frustrated so-called Spanish revolution in 2011. The encounter points are part of series that he’s currently working on, which reflected on the relationship human nature through the isolation of a precise moment. As these moments evoke memories, everyday situations or topics, they hided mythological references as well.

Ajim Juxta, an artist from Malaysia, graduated from MARA University of Technology, he got the Young ART Award in 2016. For this time, he’ll create the Installation art for this exhibition. His selection was about when in our attempt to attain perfect life and create our own utopia, we are actually building our own dystopia instead that we cannot do anything except to keep on adapting to our environment. We forgot to look deep into ourselves and to create unforgettable memories, and we ignored the importance of experiencing the process of attaining an achievement. He found that through his stay at Taiwan and his travel back to Malaysia had given him time to ponder and find answers or more questions about the monuments we built to prove our very existence and the study paintings came by. All these are based on his imagination of the types of monuments and forms that can prove our existence and express the idea of dystopia under-construction.

The two artists have this opportunity to meet in Taipei together this year. It’ll be such a aesthetic dialogues in this dual exhibition. This is the spiritual collision of these two artists and the intersection of two different cultures.

Statement【

The paintings selected for the exhibition in Haohaus belong to three different series on my work. Despite all the artworks are finished and signed within last four years, this three periods are easily recognizable as they mean quite different paths which approach to the common subjects that have always been present at my artistic career.

In recent years I have often returned to the idea of creation as a double symbolic act -of construction and destruction at once- and the artifice understood as an opposite and a substitute for the natural. This way I call into question my own work, as well as the role of the individual-creator in society and in nature. The series of decorative objects made between 2013 and 2014 are a good illustration of this. Conscious of the occidental tradition of still life and the ancient genre of vanitas painting, my work in the conception of these pieces is to assume and carry out my role of maker in order to create ironic games of representation.

The older painting titled And that was called love is one of the last works where I sought in animal world analogies that could help me to interpret and try to understand human behavior and social roles. After the European economic crisis and the frustrated so-called Spanish revolution in 2011, I found myself in a historical moment where the curtain of orders was fallen. It was easy to notice the clear difference between predator and scavenger. When the pet faces shortage, he understands he has neither nails nor fangs anymore. In this distortion of the animal I find an interesting convergence between wildness and civilization. Is there really a limit?

The encounter points are part of a series I am currently working on, which reflect on the relationship human-nature through the isolation of a precise moment. It is an encounter, which sometimes can be expressed in a detail, a gesture that does not require describing the place. They are plausible scenes that may lean toward the absurd. They evoke memories, everyday situations or topics. Often they hide mythological references as well.

Statement【

If only these works represent more than just the bleak future we’re heading to as portrayed by sci-fi authors and movies.

In our attempt to attain perfect life and to create our own utopia, we are actually building our own dystopia instead. So meaningless in our existence that we cannot do anything except to keep on adapting to our environment. We forget to look deep into ourselves and to create unforgettable memories, and we ignore the importance of experiencing the process of attaining an achievement.

We should forge our identities in whatever field we are in. What are the forms of monuments and memorial that we have in our mind. Are they just like all those monuments that are already present around us now.  I found that through my stay at Taiwan and my travel back to Malaysia had given me time to ponder and find answers or more questions about the monuments we built to prove our very existence and the study paintings came by.

But what are we celebrating here? How about all the deeds and wrongdoings that we did just to prove a point? We do need a reminder on these and so the forms and shapes I paint came from our tendencies to build monuments during our lifetime.

My works take form of abstract painting and ink drawings. What I want to highlight here are possible monuments that we can construct or vivid images of our future Dystopia. All these are based on my imagination of the types of monuments and forms that can express the idea of dystopia under-construction.
